WOMEN WHO RIDE - THE LEDGENDARY MARY McGEE

"JUST GET OUT THERE AND RIDE"

Its not so often you see an 80 year old woman riding a dirt bike, but then this is no ordinary lady. This is the legendary Mary McGee.

This incredible woman is a pioneer in the world of women motorcyclists who amongst her vast achievements has ridden her 250cc Husqvarna solo in the Baja 500 race ripping by over 17 two man teams.  Mary started car racing her early 20's in Arizona & progressed onto motorbikes, after a friend let her borrow his 1956 Triumph tiger cub. She then started racing in 1960, racing her first race on a Honda cb92 125cc. This lady has ridden desert & dirt motocross (which she still does up until today racing in the over 70's class on a 1974 Husqvarna 250) and has a place in history as one of the trailblazers for women riders in motorsport.

Learning about her has set me a few new life goals to say the least!  Read below for an excerpt from her interview with WCM.org from 2012.....

"I’ve been told that I’ve inspired other women to ride, especially by female riders who came up to me in Carson City at the AMA International Women & Motorcycling Conference in the summer of 2012. If I’ve done anything to help, that’s great. Women hold up half the sky!  Women have long faced more obstacles than men, it was always NO such as “No, you can’t vote,” or “No, you can’t race.” Or No to any random thing. Women heard a lot of “No! Women can’t do that.” I did my time demonstrating for Equal Rights, Pro-Choice and Title 9. When it comes to motorcycling, I always say, “Just get out there and ride.” Motorcycling equals freedom, plus it’s such fun. You feel so different on a motorcycle than in a car. Being a woman on a motorcycle somehow makes you feel more important, like you’re telling the world “I can do this”. More women should also enter any kind of racing event. Just enter. You may not win, but at least you entered. My goal was to always finish."

THE MIGHTY LEAH TOKELOVE

So, what can we say about this lady.......

At 17 years old Leah is the only female rider in the adult class of the DTRA UK race circuit . Racing in both the minibike class & the restricted class where she is regularly seen leaving the opposition (sometimes guys twice her age) for dust.  When she's not racing she has started organising ladies flat track days with the DTRA to try get a whole new flock of women into flat track... And to top it all of she's an all round bad ass & supporter of women motorcycling..... When I think of what I was doing at 17 years old this girl puts me to shame.

Go read all about her in this great interview in the second issue of the DTRA magazine by Anthony Brown.  We adore this lady & we think you will too.

You can read the article & the rest of the magazine here.

LADIES BE RECORD BREAKING!

Last Sunday we rode over to the legendary Ace Cafe London where  a world record attempt for the largest gathering of women motorcycle riders was being held. A total of 618 women riders turned out smashing the previous record 251 women to bits!  Women riders of all ages (the youngest rider being little Emilia at just 10 years old on her dirt bike - totally wanted to adopt her!), on all types of bikes rode from all over the UK to meet & hang out for an awesome afternoon.  A massive thanks & congrats Sherrie Woolfe & Nimi Patel for organising the event!

DIRT QUAKE IV

We rode, camped, watched flat track racing, saw the wall of death & danced in a mini mosh pit to a band fronted by Davros from Dr.Who...That was the weekend we went to Dirt Quake.

For those of you who have never been, Dirt Quake is the flat track equivalent of Wacky Races on speed. An crazy action packed weekend of both pro & amateur flat track racing where anyone and everything can be entered, with racing in fancy dress being the order of the day (our personal faves were the Clutch Customs boys racing in full teenage mutant ninja turtles garb).

We rode out on the scenic route from London with the Alex Grant, The Shop Customs boys & the lovely Bradley of Dark Arts coffee  & spent the weekend generally causing trouble in a campsite by riding whatever we could get our grubby hands on. We had a bloody ball! If you weren't there this year make sure you don't miss it next year!

Massive thanks to the guys at the DTRA & SIDEBURN MAGAZINE for putting on such a great weekend!

DTRA LADIES FLAT TRACK DAY

Start slow, go in circles, crash a bit, pick up yourself up, pick up speed, crash a bit more, put on steel shoe, hop on a 450, pray to God, look straight, throttle back, go fast and turn left........
What an amazing day at the first DTRA ladies flat track event at Rye house speedway. There were smiles all round (even when some corners ended in eating dirt), new friends made and some inspired ladies running home to buy more kit for the next one ....now excuse me whilst I go look on eBay for a flat track bike.

A special thanks to @cobuilt_anthony,  @leahtokove37 .... And all the gang at the DTRA
